Before you move in to you new home

New Home

Before moving in you should make sure that:
The relevant gas/electricity/water suppliers put the supplies in your name and set up an account for you. We suggest you read all meters when you move in. If there are key meters, you must ensure you put credit in the accounts. Remember, you must pay all the costs of water, electricity and gas, except for the costs of lighting in the communal areas shared by several

tenants. You must also ensure the following is in place before you move into your new property:

  • You register with the local authority for the council tax.
  • You have a TV license.
  • The contents of your home are insured.
  • You sign new income support forms if applicable.
  • You sign new housing benefit forms if applicable.
  • You make arrangements for a telephone connection.
  • You find out which doctor’s surgeries and dentists are in your area, and register with them. The association will be able to assist you with this by providing information about the area where you will live.
  • You enroll your children in local schools, if applicable.

You find out what the parking arrangements are in your area. You may have a parking space allocated with your home, or you may have the option to use a car parking space in the association’s car park if you live on an estate with a car park. However, increasingly properties are let with no parking facilities and you must contact the local authority to find out whether you are entitled to a resident’s permit. Please note that tenants of some newly built estates in Tower Hamlets are not entitled to a local authority resident’s parking permit.
