Community Development and Residents Participation

 

Spitalfields Housing Association has a dadicated Community Development programme since September 2004. The mission is to pursue projects which help enhance the social and economic opportunities of the communities we represent.

Staff have been working to implement objectives, based on the local area partnerships neighbourhood renewal objectives as well as our residents' needs. Listed below are some of our projects.

Our original website was developed as part of a training project for 3 Spitalfields H.A residents.

We have raised and invested £45000 over last five years to imrpove our play faciliiesy and community gardens.

We have expanded door step re-cycling services to residents and introduced kitchen composting for residents in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council.

We have employed a qualified gardener to help lead on better management of our open spaces and handed over the management of gardening contract to one of our TRA in one of our Estate .

We have established an annual Summer Programme for residents which provides 6 Play Day events on 6 different esatates and 2 SummerTrips .

Our small grants programme for residents groups designed to help in capacity building and fund work within the community. During the last one year our small grant has benefited over 400 of our residents and local residents.

We work regularly with Skills Match, Tower Hamlets Job Brokerage initiative to help local people access training and jobs in construction.

 

We work with ELBA who provide employability training, job brokerage and access to corporate volunteers for community projects.

We are working with My Bnk and Toynbee for Financila Inclusion services.

 

We have produced a Directory of Young Residents in partneship with Gateway Housing and THCH. This directory provides information on many training and employment projects for local young residents.

 

Our programme of employment also creats regular post for RLO, apprentice and work experince placement with our contractors and ourselves on a regular basis. Currently we have two apprentices working with us. From April 2012 we will have another traininee RLO, two apprentices and 4 work experince placements with our Decent Homes contractor.

 

Currently we are running two walking sessions and women's exercise classes on a weekly basis. We also arrange Healthy Eating and Living sessions with loca residents where residents from other landlord gets benefited as well.

 

We organise health awareness sessions for our residents on a regular basis.

The STAR in the Community Award:

This award programme has been set up to recognise the individuals in the community who has been investing their own time to do good to the community.The award is supported by Gateway Housing Association, Newlon Housing Trust, Old Ford Housing Association, One Housing Group, Poplar HARCA, Spitalfields Housing Association, Swan Housing Association, Tower Hamlets Community Housing and Tower Hamlets Homes.
